Why you should have a Blog on your Website

If your thinking of getting a website, you may not have considered getting a blog.  Over the past few years blogs have become bigger and bigger on the internet.  One of the biggest reasons for this is, blogs have a great ability to bring visitors to your webpage.  Once people realized how many visitors were coming to their page, they began to sell things from it.  Because of this many people have made a great deal of money off of their blogs.  If you have a business you can integrate a blog into your webpage and get new customers.
You’re probably wondering exactly what a blog is.  Well the term was coined when people began putting weekly news articles on their sites, which they called web logs.  If you shorten it, you get blog.  The reason they started adding web logs to their pages was because the search engines tended to give higher priority to pages that are regularly updated, so adding regular article updates made perfect sense.  Another reason they were created was, having whole articles about topics added a lot more relevant words to web pages, and when the search engines spidered them, they found a lot more material that people would be interested in looking up.  So to give an example if I had a webpage for my online tool business, and all that was there was five pages with some basic information about my business and how to order tools, the only people who would visit me from Google would be people who are interested in buying tools.  However, if I added a blog, about how to work with the tools I sell, then I would get all kinds of visitors, who just want information today.  You may ask, “What’s the advantage of having a bunch of people visit my site, who don’t want to buy anything?” Well they may not want anything today, but if they come to see you as an authority on working with tools they will visit your site every time they want to know something.  Eventually they will have some project pop up that requires a tool you sell and that’s when the blog really pays off.  Think of a blog sort of like a TV show, when you watch TV you have both the show and the commercials.  The TV show is only there so you will watch the commercials.  That’s what a blog does.  It gives people a reason to visit your site and get what they want out of it.  In exchange they will buy things from you now and then.
If your serious about getting a blog, there are a few things to make sure your Webmaster does.  First of all make sure pinging is enabled on the blog. Some blogs don’t come with that feature turned on by default.  Pinging is really important, because every time you post an update to your blog, it notifies all the blog related servers that you made an update.  Then those servers will spider your website and see what you wrote.  After that, they will usually move your site up in search rankings.  Now I’ve used the term spidering several times.  Incase you haven’t heard that term before, it refers to a program, such as Google that visits websites and catalogs information about them.  This is important for your site, because without it you wouldn’t be findable on Google.  Another thing that you need to make sure your web master knows is that the ping list is customized to what you do.  If your pinging non-blog related places then they may black list your site and stop visiting it.  Basically you don’t want your blog’s ping list to be just the default, because you may not be pinging all the relevant sites.  But you also don’t want it to be too long, else you may be pinging places you don’t want to ping, and get black listed.
In conclusion, no matter what kind of site you have, getting a blog will help you get more traffic, so I highly recommend them to everyone.  If you have further questions, or are interested in getting a blog for yourself you can contact us in the contact section of this site.
